Meet Dr. Yu
Sherman C. Yu, MD, FACS
Board-Certified Surgeon, American Board of Surgery
Dr. Sherman Yu graduated with High Honors in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Yu then received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he again graduated with honors. Dr. Yu then attended the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, where he completed his surgical training and became Chief Resident in Surgery. His interest in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques began during this period. Dr. Yu was especially interested in the obesity surgery field; during his time as a resident physician he authored research articles and gave presentations at national conferences on the subject.
Dr. Yu returned to Houston to complete his year-long fellowship in minimally invasive and robotic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Because the University of Texas Health Science Center was the main tertiary care center in Houston, bariatric surgery was one of the main concentrations in his training. He continually researched the field of obesity surgery during this time. He also wrote and published numerous articles, submitting them to peer-reviewed journals, and continued to give presentations at meetings nationally and internationally. Until June of 2008, Dr. Yu stayed on as an Assistant Professor of Surgery after completing his fellowship at the request of the University of Texas Health Science Center Administration. After leaving his position as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, Dr. Yu and Dr. Terry Scarborough joined forces and began to practice together as Texas Laparoscopic Consultants in the Texas Medical Center.
The Consumers Research Council of America recently recognized Dr. Yu as one of America’s Top Surgeons. He is also recognized by the Surgical Review Corporation as a Centers of Excellence surgeon. A member in good standing for the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Yu is also certified in the well-known adjustable gastric banding procedure, LAP-BAND® System surgery. He also trains surgeons all over the country in the REALIZE® Adjustable Gastric Band procedure as a representative for Ethicon EndoSurgery. Dr. Yu teaches advanced endoscopy for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES).
Dr. Yu is Park Plaza Hospital’s Bariatric Medical Director. He was the first Houston area surgeon to complete a Single Incision Laparoscopic (SILS) adjustable gastric band surgery. The first Single Incision Laparoscopic gastric sleeve procedure completed in Houston was also performed by Dr. Yu. SILS adjustable gastric banding procedures and gastric sleeve procedures are now routinely performed by Texas Laparoscopic Consultants.
With his practice specializing in the comprehensive treatment of obesity, Dr. Yu dedicates himself and his time to the exceptional care of his patients. He has also continued to complete research in the obesity surgery field for the advancement of today’s surgical techniques.
